Recently we asked a group of parents for their top tips regarding rules and advice regarding their child's use of devices.  Here are some of their top tips:

  • Study desks are setup in the dining room, with screens facing the room
  • No phones/computers etc. in the bedroom
  • No electronic devices until ready for school
  • Time limit on device use; Using a timer helps ☺  timer on to take turns
  • Have a box to put mobile phones, x-box controllers, iPads etc in after school – my son has to do his homework, chores, etc. to earn their use. This is a better alternative to taking devices as a punishment
  • No devices at dining table during meal times
  • We have banned phone and device use in the car
  • No phones in bathroom/toilet
  • No electronic devices 1 hour before bedtime
  • Our children (14 and 16 years old) must ‘hand in’ all devices at 9pm. If any devices are ‘missing’ then they must find them and hand them in too (we’ve previously found missing devices under pillows)
  • Buy a family charging hub and have all devices, phones, iPads etc. charging in kitchen overnight
  • WiFi is turned off at night
  • Get kids to conduct a ‘time management audit’
  • Phones in a bucket during social gatherings
  • Plan family activities/family time outside the house to distract them from technology
  • No technology day for whole family on Sundays
  • Sharing important information from the news or from others regarding risks of technology, e.g. girl on 9 news had bad experience on social media
  • Work with them to discuss decisions with them
  • Always let your children know you love them at the end of the day
  • Remember mum and dad were teenagers once! Parents are not here to “rain on your parade” we just want you to grow in a safe way
  • Spend some time each day talking to your children about their day or share your day with them
